Gulshan Kumar was a music baron and the founder of the T-Series music label which is the largest producer and publisher of music and videos in the country.
Gulshan Kumar singlehandedly changed the face of Indian music industry. Gulshan Kumar's T-Series produced blockbuster hits of the 90s along with many other melodies. The music scores of "Aashiqui" and "Dil Hain Ki Manta Nahin" are still remembered for their melody.
Gulshan Kumar was also a director and producer. T-Series is now run by Gulshan Kumar's son Bhushan Kumar. His daughter Tulsi Kumar is a playback singer and Kaushali Kumar is an actress.
Personal Life:
Gulshan Kumar was born into a Punjabi family as Gulshan Dua on 5 May 1956 in New Delhi. His father was a fruit juice seller in Darya Ganj market in Delhi. Gulshan also started his career as a fruit seller. Later his family acquired a shop selling records and cheap audio cassettes, from where Gulshan decided to start his career in music.
Gulshan Kumar was married to Sudesh Kumari with whom he has three children - Bhushan Kumar, Tulsi Kumar and Kaushali Kumar.
Professional Career:
Gulshan Kumar started his career in music as a seller of records and cheap audio cassettes. He used to sell cassettes at a cheaper rate. This was just the beginning of what was to be India's largest music company. Later Gulshan Kumar started his own audio cassette operation called “Super Cassettes Industries”. The business started to flourish and soon Gulshan Kumar became one of the top businessmen in music. He carried on the business by introducing religious music cassettes at low prices. Later he also directed and produced movies and serials pertaining to Hindu mythology.
Gulshan Kumar founded T-Series emerged as one of the top music labels in India. T-Series is now run by his son Bhushan Kumar and continues to be a major label. It is the largest producer and publisher of music and videos. T-Series publishes original soundtracks, old devotional bhajans, remixes, pop hits and so on. T-Series has a huge control over share of the Indian music market. It also has the largest distribution network of more than 2500 dealers.
One of the most successful movie score of Gulshan Kumar was for the film "Aashiqui". The music of the movie became a tremendous hit and all its songs are still remembered for its romantic and melodious tone. The music score of the movies "Bahaar Aane Tak”, "Bewafa Sanam" and “Jeena Teri Gali Mein” also become hugely successful. With the movie “Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi”, Gulshan Kumar created a craze among the audiences.
As a producer Gulshan Kumar has produced films like Bewafa Sanam, Shabnam, Jeena Marna Tere Sang, Sangeet, Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, Jeena Teri Gali Mein, Appu Raja, Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka etc. Gulshan Kumar directed the film Bewafa Sanam which was a super hit of its times. Gulshan Kumar was also known to have launched newcomers to the industry; like he launched his brother Krishan Kumar. Gulshan Kumar also gave break to many budding singers including Sonu Nigam, Kumar Sanu, Anuradha Paudwal and Vandana Bajpai.
Ill Health and Death:
Gulshan Kumar was killed on 12 August 1997, outside the Jeeteshwar Mahadev Mandir in Andheri West suburb of Mumbai. Unidentified gunmen started fire on him as he was standing outside the temple. Gulshan Kumar was rushed to hospital but was declared brought dead.
